Common Requirements - Timber Products, Finishes & Treatment

(i) one of the following alternative termite resistant timber species or preservative treatments against termite attack are to be specified for timber framing of floors, walls, ceilings and roofs:

- Naturally termite resistant timbers to AS 3660.1 Appendix C

- Preservative treated timber to the applicable hazard class to AS1604.1

 

The Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority (APVMA) have recommended that CCA treated timber can no longer be used for new construction of playground equipment, domestic and patio decking, handrails, garden and park furniture, picnic tables and exterior seating. The major concern has been the potential for leaching out of arsenic compounds from the treated timber.
Prevent direct contact between chemically treated timber and unprotected metal. All fasteners must be treated to prevent corrosion.

 

(ii) Australian Indigenous timber species are to be specified wherever practicable, with due regard to suitability of use and location. In preference to be imported timber species, in accordance with Government Policy.
